Exponential growth and decay
Something that grows by the same percentage each period multiplies by the same factor each time.
How to do it
- Turn the percentage into a multiplier: +10% is × 1.1, −20% is × 0.8.
- Multiply once for each period, or use the power.
Worked example
An investment of $2000 and grows by 20% each year. What is it after 2 years?
Growing by 20% means multiplying by 1.2 each year. After 2 years: 2000 × 1.2^2 = 2880.
Answer: 2880
