Percentage increase and decrease
A percentage increase or decrease changes a price by a percentage of itself.
How to do it
- Find the percentage of the original amount.
- Increase: add it on. Decrease: take it off.
Worked example
A jacket costs $80. The price is reduced by 50%. What is the new price, in dollars?
50% of 80 is 80 × 50 ÷ 100 = 40. Take it off: 80 − 40 = 40.
Answer: 40
