Sharing equally

Sharing equally means everyone gets the same amount. 20 ÷ 5 asks how many each of 5 groups gets.

How to do it

  1. Method 1, share it out: give one counter to each group, and keep going round until none are left.
  2. Count how many each group has. Anything that cannot go round again is the remainder.
  3. Method 2, count in groups: count 5, 10, 15… until you reach 20. The number of jumps is the answer.

Two ways to do it

Method 1: Share it out

Share 20 counters between 5 groups, one each at a time, and count what each group gets.

20 ÷ 5
Give one to each of the 5 groups. Keep going round.
Each group gets 4.
20 ÷ 5 = 4

Method 2: Count in groups

Count up in 5s from 0. How many jumps does it take to reach 20?

20 ÷ 5
5, 10, 15, 20
4 jumps of 5 make 20.
20 ÷ 5 = 4
