How to do it

  1. Method 1, jumps: start at the first number.
  2. Jump by the hundreds, then the tens, then the ones of the second number.
  3. Where you land is the answer.
  4. Method 2, columns: add the ones. If they make 10 or more, write the ones digit and carry 1.
  5. Add the next column, plus any carry. Keep going left.

Two ways to do it

Method 1: Jumps

Start at 347. Jump forward by 200, then 80, then 5.

347 + 285
347 + 200 = 547
547 + 80 = 627
627 + 5 = 632
347 + 285 = 632

Method 2: Columns

Line up the digits. Add each column from the right, carrying when you pass 10.

347 + 285
Work right to left, one column at a time.
347 + 285 = 632
