Multiply 3-digit by 2-digit
Two ways to multiply 347 × 63: split the numbers into tens and ones and multiply the parts (you can see every piece), or line the digits up in columns.
How to do it
- Method 1, split it up: break each number into its place-value parts.
- Multiply every part of one number by every part of the other.
- Add all the pieces.
- Method 2, columns: multiply by each digit from the right, carrying when you pass 10, one row per digit, then add the rows.
Two ways to do it
Method 1: Split it up
Break 347 into 300 + 40 + 7 and 63 into 60 + 3. Multiply each piece, then add.
347 × 63
300 × 60 = 18000
40 × 60 = 2400
7 × 60 = 420
300 × 3 = 900
40 × 3 = 120
7 × 3 = 21
18000 + 2400 + 420 + 900 + 120 + 21 = 21861
Method 2: Columns
Multiply by the ones digit, then by the tens digit (with a 0 on the end), then add the two rows.
347 × 63
Row 1: 347 × 3 = 1041
Row 2: 347 × 60 = 20820
1041 + 20820 = 21861
