Division with remainders

When a number does not divide exactly, what is left over is the remainder.

How to do it

  1. Method 1, share it out: give one counter to each group, and keep going round until none are left.
  2. Count how many each group has. Anything that cannot go round again is the remainder.
  3. Method 2, long division: how many 5s fit? Write it on top, write what you used underneath, subtract, then bring down the next digit. Repeat.

Two ways to do it

Method 1: Share it out

Share 23 counters between 5 groups, one each at a time, and count what each group gets.

23 ÷ 5
Give one to each of the 5 groups. Keep going round.
Each group gets 4, with 3 left over.
23 ÷ 5 = 4 r 3

Method 2: Long division

Write 23 inside the bus stop and 5 outside. Work from the left: divide, multiply, subtract, bring down the next digit.

23 ÷ 5
Divide, multiply, subtract, bring down. Repeat for each digit.
23 ÷ 5 = 4 r 3

Watch out
The remainder is always smaller than the divisor.
