Divide 3-digit by 1-digit

Two ways to divide 852 ÷ 4: take off easy chunks (you can see what is left each time), or use the bus stop written method.

How to do it

  1. Method 1, chunks: take away a big easy multiple of 4 (like 4 × 100 or 4 × 10).
  2. Keep taking chunks until less than 4 is left. Add up the lots of 4.
  3. Method 2, long division: how many 4s fit? Write it on top, write what you used underneath, subtract, then bring down the next digit. Repeat.

Two ways to do it

Method 1: Take off chunks

Take away easy multiples of 4 from 852 until nothing (or less than 4) is left. Add up how many lots of 4 you took.

852 ÷ 4
852 − 800 (4 × 200) = 52
52 − 40 (4 × 10) = 12
12 − 12 (4 × 3) = 0
Lots of 4: 200 + 10 + 3 = 213
852 ÷ 4 = 213

Method 2: Long division

Write 852 inside the bus stop and 4 outside. Work from the left: divide, multiply, subtract, bring down the next digit.

852 ÷ 4
Divide, multiply, subtract, bring down. Repeat for each digit.
852 ÷ 4 = 213

Watch out
Check by multiplying back: 213 × 4 = 852.
If the divisor does not fit, write 0 on top and move to the next digit.
