Division with remainders (larger numbers)

When a number does not divide exactly, what is left over is the remainder.

How to do it

  1. Method 1, chunks: take away a big easy multiple of 6 (like 6 × 100 or 6 × 10).
  2. Keep taking chunks until less than 6 is left. Add up the lots of 6.
  3. Method 2, long division: how many 6s fit? Write it on top, write what you used underneath, subtract, then bring down the next digit. Repeat.

Two ways to do it

Method 1: Take off chunks

Take away easy multiples of 6 from 157 until nothing (or less than 6) is left. Add up how many lots of 6 you took.

157 ÷ 6
157 − 120 (6 × 20) = 37
37 − 36 (6 × 6) = 1
Lots of 6: 20 + 6 = 26, with 1 left over
157 ÷ 6 = 26 r 1

Method 2: Long division

Write 157 inside the bus stop and 6 outside. Work from the left: divide, multiply, subtract, bring down the next digit.

157 ÷ 6
Divide, multiply, subtract, bring down. Repeat for each digit.
157 ÷ 6 = 26 r 1

Watch out
The remainder is always smaller than the divisor.
